A community known for its struggles showed off its strengths yesterday.
Live music helped residents of the Downtown Eastside kick off the 12th annual Hope in Shadows photography contest.
The three-day contest aims to give residents of the troubled neighbourhood a chance to take pride in their community.
Residents are given a free camera and are expected to submit more than 3,000 photos for cash prizes.
Their photos are also printed into a calendar, which is then sold by low income residents who share the profits.
More than 75,000 calendars have been sold since 2003.
