Lytton RCMP are looking for any tips on what may have led to a seemingly random shooting of a Burnaby man participating in a cycling event south of Spences Bridge early Sunday morning.
Fifty-nine-year-old Craig Premack was hit in the forearm and suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries when he was shot on Highway 1 just south of Spences Bridge while participating in the Cache Creek 600.
An unknown suspect is believed to have fired several gunshots at Premack as he rode southbound along the highway.
The cyclist and his bicycle were both struck once before the suspect fled the scene in what is believed to be a pickup truck.
Mounties say the shooting appears to be not targeted.
“We are happy he is alive,” said Craig Premack’s son Paul. “It is a blessing that he was hit in the arm, and nowhere near his head, his spine or his heart. We are happy that he is in stable condition, but we are shocked and worried.”
Police have released the photos of the cement barrier along Highway 1 where the shooting victim was found suffering from serious injuries as well as the victim’s bicycle.
The Cache Creek 600 is an annual 600 km cycling event that starts in Maple Ridge on Saturday morning, goes to Cache Creek and ends in Maple Ridge on Sunday.
