Rallies are expected to take place this afternoon in Coquitlam against the more than 600 teacher layoffs announced last week.

Teachers and parents are set to protest outside two local schools — Hillcrest Middle School and Doctor Charles Best Secondary School.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

More than 600 teachers have been issued layoff notices last week.

The Coquitlam Teachers’ Association is worried many of them will not be hired back in September, calling the layoffs unprecedented.

But the Coquitlam School District says this process happens every year.

Last year, the school district laid off 483 teachers.

The district says the job cuts are required to deal with a severe budget shortfall.
