VANCOUVER – The Vancouver School Board is set to pass next year’s budget tomorrow, with more last-minute attempts to save certain positions.
Dozens of student athletes showed up at the board offices last night in support of the district’s athletic coordinator position. That person organizes all inter-school games, dealing with 20,000 students and 1,500 volunteer coaches. However, the $70,000 job is on the chopping block with the board facing a budget shortfall of $11 million.
Without the coordinator job there are fears teams will be able to compete and fewer students will end up taking part in athletics.
“We knew this was coming with this frozen provincial funding that we are now getting into some really tough areas that we have in previous years managed to save, despite the pressure,” said Patti Bacchus from the Vancouver School Board.
