Man shot after fight on a Saskatchewan First Nation

AHTAHKAKOOP FIRST NATION, Sask. – A man was transported to a Saskatoon hospital after he was shot in the pelvic region after a fight on a Saskatchewan First Nation late Tuesday night.

Shellbrook RCMP were initially called to the Ahtahkakoop First Nation around 11:20 p.m. for a fight taking place between two men at a residence.

By the time Mounties arrived, they were told the fight had been resolved and one of the men involved had left. An investigation was started and police determined alcohol was a factor in the dispute.

Around 20 minutes after police left, they were called back to the same residence for a report of a firearm being discharged at the same residence.

Both men from the fight along with a woman were present when Mounties arrived where they found a 41-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his pelvic region.

He was taken to Shellbrook Hospital for initial treatment and then taken to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon for further treatment. There is no word on his condition.

The second man at the residence was arrested.

Stephen (Steve) Masuskapoe, 59, is charged with aggravated assault, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, pointing a firearm, careless use of a firearm and unsafe storage of a firearm.

Masuskapoe is scheduled to appear in Prince Albert provincial court on Thursday.

Police say Masuskapoe and the victim are known to each.
