REGINA – A controversial program that requires City of Regina homeowners to pay for sidewalk and gutter repairs will be reviewed.
Councillors voted unanimously Monday night to consider alternatives for local road improvements. It comes after several homeowners successfully petitioned the city saying the cost of repairs was too high.
“The comments that have been made are heartfelt, and there is a concern,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “The cost per homeowner can be significant, the interest rate can be high, the portion one resident (pays) versus another in a cul-de-sac or curved street can be different.”
Earlier this year, residents received notice they were on the hook for an average of $7,400 each, or $10,000 spread out over 10 years. Eight of those road repair projects have been cancelled.
Fougere says the city will consider whether the program should be canceled altogether.
The review is expected to be complete in the fall.
