According to the USGS, the area is one of the most sesimically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates. Residents of the Solomon Islands are still dealing with damage caused by flash floods that hit on April 3, killing 23 people and leaving about 9,000 homeless.
