B.C. politicians are expressing their condolences to the loved ones of former finance minister Jim Flaherty, who passed away at the age of 64 earlier this afternoon.

Premier Christy Clark found out the news in an unrelated press conference today and says Flaherty’s death is a terrible loss for Canada.

“Jim Flaherty returned our country to a balanced budget. I can tell you from experience that is really hard to do, takes a lot of tough decisions,” said Clark. “My condolences go out to this family and everybody who loved him in Ontario. People will remember him as a great finance minister and a great Canadian.”

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson said in a statement he was saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Flaherty.

“I had the chance to work with Jim through a number of federal budgets, and Canadians owe him tremendous gratitude for a lifelong commitment to public service,” said Robertson.

“On behalf of City Council and the people of Vancouver, I want to offer my condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

The House of Commons was officially suspended on Thursday afternoon.

Flaherty resigned from cabinet just last month, and said he would be returning to the private sector.

He had been battling a rare skin condition, which he revealed publicly in January 2013.
