WINNIPEG – An inquest started Monday in the death of Michael Langan, 17, who was shocked by a police stun gun in July 2008.
Langan was hit by the stun gun during a confrontation with police on William Avenue.
Police, who were investigating a theft, said Langan had a knife and refused to put it down.
His mother, Sharon Shymko, filed a lawsuit against the City of Winnipeg, police and stun gun-maker Taser International in 2010. The suit is still pending.
“I hope they realize that they overreacted too quickly,” Shymko said Monday. “Tasers do kill people and they’ve got to learn to use it the right way and take their time before they even use it.”
