CALGARY- Fire broke out at a home in southwest Calgary on Friday afternoon, sending a thick plume of black smoke into the sky.
It happened just before 1:30 p.m. in the community of Rosscarrock, at 4400 block of 13 Ave. S.W.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, and found a detached garage fully engulfed in flames. The roof collapsed within minutes.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire a short time later, but had to contend with construction materials and propane tanks inside the garage that were exploding.
As a result, eight nearby homes were evacuated and some surrounding roads were shut down.
The entire garage was destroyed, and heat damaged the siding of a neighbouring garage, a fence, and the windows of a nearby home.
Fortunately no one was injured.
Investigators are now working to determine the cause.
