Calgary family devastated after massive fire destroys SE home

A Calgary family is devastated after their house went up in flames in the southeast community of Douglas Glen.

Crews were called to the 500 block of Douglas Glen Point SE just before 5:00 a.m. Saturday to reports of a huge fire.

The home where the fire started is destroyed. The roof of another home has partially collapsed and three others received heat damage.

A family of 3 lived in the home where the fire started. Stacey Rothweiler’s woke up his wife and son when he first noticed a small fire in the garage.

Before crews arrived, attempts were made to put the fire out using a fire extinguisher, but the flames quickly spread.

“There was lots of smoke from the garage,” says Stacey’s son, Sheldon Rothweiler. “The flames really started going 10 minutes after we got out and the whole house was on fire.”

The couple’s daughter passed away of medical complications 3 years ago at the age of thirteen. They had left her room intact, full of irreplaceable memories.

“This is not what we needed at all,” says Pam Rothweiler. “There goes everything. My daughter’s room and all of her pictures…everything is gone.”

A number of houses on the street were evacuated as a precaution; the battalion chief says everyone got out of the affected homes safely.

Calgary Fire has not released the cause of the fire. Damage is estimated at more than $1-million.
