Calgary man struck and killed by semi west of the city

CALGARY- Witnesses suggest the victim of a fatal pedestrian collision on the Trans-Canada Highway may have been trying to repair his vehicle at the time.

RCMP say he was standing nearby his truck on Highway 1 west of Old Banff Coach Road when he was struck and killed by a passing semi.

The 54-year-old from Calgary died on scene, shortly before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators still can’t say whether the man was on the shoulder or the road when he was hit.

Greg Chalmers was picking up his daughter from school in Springbank around 2:30 p.m. and remembers passing the grey Dodge truck.

“When I went by he was coming from the passenger’s side around the back and his hood was up so I moved from the slow lane over to the fast lane to get some clearance on him,” says Chalmers.

Returning home, he says his heart sunk when he passed the same area and saw emergency crews surrounding the same truck.

“He was totally off onto the shoulder where it seemed like he had plenty of room.”

RCMP are speaking with witnesses as well as the semi-driver. He told investigators he didn’t see much at the time of the crash.

Police say speed and alcohol are not considered factors. Charges are not anticipated.
