Alice Munro honoured with coin from Royal Canadian Mint

TORONTO — Canadian author Alice Munro, who won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, has been honoured with a collector coin by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Munro unveiled the coin Monday at the Greater Victoria Public Library.

Ian E. Bennett, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint said in a release: “This coin is a beautiful and meaningful keepsake for readers, writers and collectors alike.”

The Mint is donating $10,000 in Munro’s name to the Writers’ Trust of Canada.

Only 7,500 of the 99.99 per cent pure silver coins were minted and will retail for $69.95 each.

The reverse image, by Canadian artist Laurie McGaw, includes a passage from Munro’s The View from Castle Rock.

Munro, 82, is the first Canadian woman to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. Citing poor health, she was unable to attend the ceremony in Sweden last December but her daughter Jenny Munro accepted it on her behalf.
