Millions in cash seized in traffic stops in Manitoba

WINNIPEG – Police showed off almost a million dollars in cash Monday that was seized in just two traffic stops.

Police say RCMP officers found $735,000 in a vehicle during a routine traffic stop near Headingley. And Winnipeg police found $225,000 hidden in a truck bed liner also near Headingley. Police didn’t immediately provide further details of the seizures, the investigations or charges laid.

The stacks of 20, 50 and 100 dollar bills displayed on a table at RCMP headquarters in Winnipeg will be given to police forces and victims’ services organizations through the province’s Criminal Property Forfeiture Fund, officials said.

“These are some of the largest successful forfeitures in the province’s history,” Manitoba justice minister Andrew Swan is quoted in a news release.  “We continue to take very large sums of money out of crime and reinvest that money across the province, supporting victims, police and public safety programs.  Our ultimate goal is to reduce crime and keep our communities safer.”

The province says more than $7.3 million in assets have been successfully forfeited to Manitoba through criminal property forfeitures since 2010.  There are currently more than 150 forfeiture files being pursued involving vehicles, properties and cash, the minister said.
