NAPANEE, Ont. – Via Rail says it expects service on the busy Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal line to resume today.
A First Nations blockade forced Via to cancel 26 trains yesterday and bus an estimated five-thousand passengers between Toronto and Ottawa.
Spokesman Jacques Gagnon says Via had to charter about 100 buses to move passengers due to the blockade near Napanee in eastern Ontario.
Ontario Provincial Police say the blockade began Tuesday night and ended peacefully late yesterday afternoon. They are continuing to investigate the incident.
The blockade was part of recent protests in the Belleville, Ontario area by a First Nations group calling on Ottawa for an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women.
Chief R. Donald Maracle says the Tyendinaga Mohawk Council didn’t support the blockade and wasn’t involved in the protest.
However, Maracle says the council supports the need for a commission of inquiry.
