KELOWNA — It’s back to the drawing board for a Kelowna hobbyist after destroying his remote controlled plane when it smashed into some hydro wires Tuesday, prompting a response from FortisBC and fire department.
The incident happened mid-afternoon on Scenic Road in North Glenmore where Doug Wallace was flying his large and expensive remote controlled plane.
Wallace says he was bringing it in for a landing when the wind picked-up.
“I heard a big bang and saw sparks,” says Wallace. “Pieces fell to the ground and they’re already ignited because the carbon fibre is conductive, electricity went through, heated things up from the inside and it’s all held together with epoxy resin and that’s flammable. So basically, the wing burst into flames.”
Despite colliding with the wires and catching fire, the plane only tripped but didn’t knock out power to the area.
