Bearspaw home destroyed by fire

CALGARY – A family living northwest of the city is now homeless after their house went up in flames.

Fire swept through the upscale Bearspaw home on Tuesday afternoon, completely destroying it.

One of the residents had left the house on Woodlands Estates Crescent and came back to the smell of smoke, prompting her to call 911.

Crews from Rockyview, Balzac, and Cochrane rushed to the scene around 4 p.m., and were able to keep the fire from spreading.

Dr. Jamie McLellan lives at the home with his wife and three of his four children.

He works at the Foothills Hospital, and says while the loss of his home is devastating it could have been much worse.

“We’ve lost stuff, but our family is okay,” McLellan says. “My son could have been home fifteen minutes earlier on the bus and in the house, so we’re lucky.”
