WATCH: Parts of B.C.’s Interior dealing with flooding due to heavy rain, melting snow

Unusually warm temperatures, combined with rain and melting snow, are raising concerns of widespread flooding in parts of the Interior.

Many areas of Cranbrook and other towns in the region have flooded, and volunteers are sandbagging in a number of areas.

The excessive run-off is also turning the city’s municipal water system a little cloudy, so the town is advising people to boil their tap water on a voluntary basis for anyone with a weakened immune system.

Residents are also being urged to stay away from swollen rivers and streams, and to stay off frozen lakes, because the ice could be weak.

“This is a really big concern for us at this time of year,” said Mike Adams from the Kamloops Fire & Rescue Service. “With the springtime and the warmer temperatures, as you can see the ice along the river is starting to melt. We encourage everyone in the area, if you’re down on the water’s edge, please, stay off the ice.”
