Coach Carter, made famous by Samuel L. Jackson, comes to Winnipeg

WINNIPEG – Samuel L. Jackson plays the tough-talking academics-first coach in the movie Coach Carter – now the real deal is coming to Winnipeg.

The real-life Coach Ken Carter expected his basketball players to keep up in the classroom as well as on the court, and when they didn’t, he benched the undefeated team.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Dakota Collegiate is bringing Carter to Winnipeg for a talk to students and a gala dinner that will raise funds to create a proper athletics field for the school.

“It started as just Coach Carter coming to speak to our student body, and it’s morphed into something much bigger,” said Dean Favoni, the head of Dakota’s math department.

Dakota is celebrating its 50th anniversary, needs new athletics facilities and had the opportunity, explained alumnus Les Wiens, who made the first contact with Carter.

“It was just a magical coming together of events,” Wiens said.

The gala dinner is April 24 at Canad Inns Polo Park. More information is available on the school website.
