Snowmobiler killed in avalanche on Boulder Mountain near Revelstoke

A snowmobiler has been killed in an avalanche on Boulder Mountain near Revelstoke Saturday afternoon, RCMP confirm.

According to Mounties, four men from Alberta were snowmobiling near the Boulder Mountain Snowmobile cabin when the avalanche was triggered at around 3:30 p.m.

Two of the men were caught in the avalanche and were later found by Search and Rescue crews. Cst. Lesley Smith said a 35-year-old man was found to be unconscious but later succumbed to his injuries. The second man survived with non-life threatening injuries.

All snowmobilers were equipped with appropriate safety gear and beacons.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating the death.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre said the danger rating was high for the alpine and treeline areas and considerable for below treeline areas.

The area is a popular destination for snowmobilers.
