SASKATOON – A Saskatchewan RCMP officer appeared on a popular high-profile U.S. talk show on Tuesday.

Cpl. Doug Green appeared on the Katie Couric show during an episode dedicated to life changing drones.

Green is a traffic reconstuctionist who used an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to locate a 25-year-old man who wandered away from a motor vehicle crash on Highway 5 near St. Denis, Sask. early in the morning of May 9, 2013.

The man called 9-1-1 but was unable to tell officers his location. A ground and aerial search failed to find him.

Searchers were able to pinpoint his general location and that’s when Green launched the UAV – a Dragan Flyer X4-E5 – where he was able to find the man curled up at the base of a tree next to a snow bank.

He was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia and recovered from the ordeal.

“It says a lot about our organization and our program that we can use technology for good purposes and in this case a successful search and rescue missions,” Green said after his appearance on the show.

Green said the opportunity to tell the story on Couric’s show was both overwhelming and exciting.

Couric’s producers discovered video of the rescue on YouTube and invited Green to the show to tell his story.
