GTAA boss to make Toronto Pearson airport review public

TORONTO – Greater Toronto Airports Authority CEO Howard Eng plans to make the official review of this week’s ground stop at Toronto Pearson International Airport public.

The GTAA usually keeps their internal reviews secret from public view, but now insists they want people to know what went wrong and how they plan on improving.

In an interview with the Toronto Star, Eng apologized to passengers after thousands were stranded when the airport temporarily banned airplanes from landing due to the backlog of flights at the terminals caused by extreme cold weather.

WestJet public relations manager Robert Palmer also issued an apology on the company’s Youtube page Wednesday.

“We are so sorry to see that it’s had such a far reaching impact on so many of you, our guest,” he said. “Please know we are doing everything we can to get those of you who are still stranded to your destination as quickly as possible.”

Some frustrated travellers were forced to spend extra days at hotels and inside the airport when arrivals were cancelled for nearly eight hours between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Pearson airport authorities were heavily criticized for their lack of communication during the crisis and many travellers took to Twitter to express their discontent.

Meanwhile, that backlog at Pearson is starting to ease in time for the weekend, but authorities are reminding passengers to check their flight status before leaving home.
