River skating trail to open Friday

The long-awaited warming up of Winnipeg’s weather arrived just in time for the opening of one of the city’s top outdoor attractions.

The Forks says its river skating trail will officially open Friday. A media event is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. A wide path on the Assiniboine River downtown was already cleared Thursday.

In 2008, the skating trail on the Assiniboine and Red Rivers broke the Guinness Book record for longest naturally frozen skating trail in the world, at 8.54 kilometres.

The trail is now known as the Red River Mutual trail.

Officials say there will also be more details on upcoming activities at the Forks’ Arctic Glacier Winter Park and on the river at the historic gathering place.

The high temperature for Friday is forecast to be -5 degrees Celcius, practically tropical weather compared to the arctic temperatures of -20 and below the city has experienced for most of the last couple of weeks.
