Dozens of volunteers were out in Brackendale today to help with the 28th annual bald eagle count.

The most up-to-date tally stands at more than 1,600 birds, which is double last year’s estimate of about 800.

The numbers have not been this high since 2007, when 1757 eagles were counted.

Count organizer Thor Froslev says they had up to 80 people participating in the count today.

The count perimeter along the Squamish, Cheakamus and Mamquam rivers spans 40 kilometers and is divided into 25 areas, each supervised by three counters.

The volunteers set out on foot, raft or kayak trying to spot the eagles.

The results of the count are then sent to BC Wildlife Service.
