Family of deceased Abbotsford baby still waiting for answers on suspicious death

14-month-old Alexcia had bright blue eyes. Strangers used to stop her mom Jacqueline McKamey in stores and exclaim at how blue her eyes were.

“She loved playing outside, playing in general,” says Jacqueline. “She loved swimming in the summer. She just loved learning and doing new things. She loved sunglasses, she’d steal everybody’s, even if she had her own.”

Alexcia had only just started to walk when she died under suspicious circumstances this past September. She was with her dad and they were visiting a home in Chilliwack, when police and ambulance were called to the home and found her in medical distress. She was rushed to hospital, but sadly, did not make it.

Her death is being treated as suspicious. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team say Alexcia did not die of natural causes, but they are still waiting on toxicology and pathology reports.

One person of interest was interviewed, and police say they are looking to speak with anyone else, but no charges have yet been laid.

Jacqueline says she was waiting outside in her car to pick up Alexica when her baby’s father

told her the little girl had choked. “And then [he] called me back about 30 minutes later and said she was no longer breathing,” says Jacqueline. “And so I ran down the sidewalk and ran in the house and from there we’ve known not much else.”

Now Jacqueline has created a roadside memorial for Alexcia, while they wait for news.

“Because we’ve been waiting for answers for so long and we had nowhere really else to mourn the loss of my daughter,” says Jacqueline. “We want our home to be filled with happy memories rather than sad ones.”

She knows the homicide team is doing the best they can, but the waiting is taking a toll.

“It’s really hard waiting for answers, especially when it’s been this long. It’s tough on all of us,”she says.

Jacqueline knows this will be a difficult Christmas. Instead of celebrating with her daughter, she is collecting donations for a toy drive tonight in Mission, hoping other children will benefit.

“I want answers as to why she’s not in our life any more, why she’s gone, why she doesn’t get a chance to live a life or grow up. If somebody hurt her I want charges laid,” she says.

“You question it all the time as a mom. You wonder if there’s something you could have done different or if it would have happened with you, or if is was best it happened with them. I just don’t know. I have nothing. No answers. Just so many questions.”
