NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – A B.C. Supreme Court judge has granted an injunction to the City of Abbotsford, allowing officials to remove a homeless camp set up in a city parking lot.
The decision was handed down Friday in New Westminster.
Campers near Jubilee Park in the centre of the Fraser Valley city have until 4 p.m. Saturday to leave the lot.
The city took legal action after about 20 people set up a wooden barricade as a wind break around several tents in the encampment.
The injunction is the latest in a series of disputes between homeless residents and the city.
Officials apologized earlier this year for dumping chicken manure on the grounds of a different camp in Abbotsford in an effort to oust the homeless.
DJ Larkin from PIVOT Legal says the residents have nowhere to go and he’s worried for their future.
“This puts people at incredible risk, without shelter how can people live? It’s going to be hard for these people to clear out in time, I’m very worried about what is going to happen tomorrow.”
Larkin says he hopes the people of Abbotsford show up to help the residents of the camp.
