Overnight snowfall leaves slick city streets

CALGARY – A sudden snow storm that hit parts of the city late Sunday night left some streets slick and snow-covered for the Monday morning commute.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning around 11 p.m., cautioning that as much as 10 centimeters of snow could fall by Monday morning.

Although some communities in south Calgary saw barely any snow, others in the city’s northwest were walloped by winter weather.

The snow caused city streets to be slippery, and was a contributing factor in several collisions.

Calgary police say there were 126 crashes reported between midnight and 9 a.m., 12 of which involved injuries – including two pedestrians who were hit by cars.

The City of Calgary says they will begin removing snow along major roadways later this week, as they work to deal with large snow piles that have accumulated along curbs and gutters.

It’s possible some of the huge piles of snow seen throughout the city might melt a little on Tuesday.

According to Meteorologist Jordan Witzel, the temperature will warm to a high of 6°C, before cooling off again on Wednesday.
