A hazardous material team is on-site along the Alaska Highway near Wonowon after a tanker truck full of gasoline rolled over into a ditch last night.
Police say at 7:30 p.m. the truck carrying 60,000 litres of fuel rolled over into a ditch next to the Alaska Highway that runs through the community of Wonowon, which is one hour north of Fort St. John.
After the spill, RCMP evacuated an area of 300 metres, which included a 200-person worker camp, a gas station and a handful of residences. The evacuees were taken to the local school for the night.
The Alaska Highway had to be closed in both directions for 10 hours. It’s now open to single lane traffic.
It’s unknown how much gasoline leaked from the tanker. The Ministry of Environment will assess any damage from the accident.
