Snow Angel program especially important in wake of blizzard

CALGARY- As Calgarians continue to dig out from a deep freeze, the importance of the city’s Snow Angel program is more clear than ever.

The program, which sees Good Samaritans volunteer to shovel their neighbours’ walks, was brought in a decade ago. It’s been especially helpful for those who aren’t physically able to shovel.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says it’s a wonderful way to make a difference.

“We get notes every year from Calgarians who talk about what the simple act of giving means to them,” he said. “One woman wrote us to say that the Snow Angel program is what allows her to stay living in her own home. Another wrote about how she’s been struggling to care for her husband with Parkinson’s, and what an incredible difference her Snow Angel has made.”

He added that one of his favourites came in the form of a tweet.

“My favourite? ‘I’m 72, but I have to shovel all of the walks on my street because the old people can’t.”
