New Zealand’s acting high commissioner to Tonga, Peter Lund said on Tuesday that Tonga was facing “a whole new challenge” with the cleanup following the aftermath of an underwater volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami. All the homes on one of Tonga’s small outer islands have been destroyed with three people confirmed dead. Meanwhile, experts remain baffled by what caused the eruption and subsequent tsunami that spread across the Pacific in a matter of hours, with an atmospheric shockwave detected around the world.
