The elected leadership of several Wet’suwet’en First Nations are calling for the immediate resignation of Canada’s Federal Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett. Four elected Wet’suwet’en chiefs say they were excluded from the process by which British Columbia, the federal government and the nation’s hereditary leaders arrived at a proposed memorandum of understanding on Wet’suwet’en land rights and title. Speaking to reporters outside Rideau cottage on Tuesday morning, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau brushed off calls for Bennett’s resignation and thanked her for her service on the Indigenous Relations file.
