Global National: July 10

While the NATO summit continues in Washington, D.C., the Trudeau government says it will buy up to 12 conventional submarines, as Russia and China’s presence in the Arctic has raised concerns about their military ambitions. Plus, in the wake of a disastrous U.S. presidential debate performance, there are growing calls for President Joe Biden to pass the baton to a new generation of leaders, from Washington to Hollywood alike. Parts of British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan are under heat warnings again, while Eastern Canada is being hit by heavy rain from what remains of Hurricane Beryl. In Montreal, one of the first pro-Palestinian university encampments to go up in Canada is now being dismantled. An overnight manhunt in the U.K. has ended with the arrest of a 26-year-old man, a former soldier who allegedly killed three women with a crossbow. Plus, what was supposed to be a week-long trip to the International Space Station (ISS) for NASA veteran astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams has quickly stretched into over a month-long stay. And finally, it wasn’t the outcome Canadian soccer fans were hoping for, though it was the one most expected: Canada lost to Argentina 2-0 in the Copa America.
