High water levels have prompted the closure of portions of the waterfront trail along Lake Ontario.

The work will be completed over the next eight years and mainly involves reinforcing 33 locations where the shoreline has been damaged by storms.

The closure will allow crews to rebuild the shorewall and construction will also soon begin on the 30-metre-wide Promenade Park.

'Had we dealt with this motion 10 to 15 years ago, we would have debated whether or not it was actually needed because it was a new thing for us,' says Coun. Chad Collins.

The trail has been closed to the public since April 30, after major rainfall and high water levels caused significant damage.

The Waterfront Trail will be closed until further notice, between Bayfront Park and Princess Point.
