Get ready for more snow this weekend

EDMONTON – Environment Canada has dropped the freezing rain warning it put in place for the Capital Region Saturday morning. The warning was issued as patchy freezing rain was expected to cross through the region Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, Environment Canada also issued winter storm watches for the Capital Region, along with much of central and northwestern Alberta. On Saturday, a number of those watches were upgraded to heavy snowfall warnings.

You won’t have to get your shovels out until Sunday, though. That’s when the storm is set to blow in from B.C.; it’s expected to rear its ugly head in central Alberta first, before moving south that night.

“The watch is issued because of the combination of bands of heavy snow and high winds,” Global Edmonton‘s chief meteorologist, Nicola Crosbie explained. “There will be drifting and blowing snow as well.”

“Travelling on Monday would not be the best suggestion.”

Environment Canada is predicting snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 centimetres, depending on the area. Other regions could see more than 30 centimetres.

Environment Canada advises people in the affected areas to “be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions.”

On the plus side, temperatures are expected to be mild for the weekend.

Unfortunately, that warmth won’t last long. The mercury will dip down to about -11 degrees on Monday, and it only gets worse from there – with a low of -25 degrees in the forecast for Thursday.
