Nicola also started working as a waitress in her parents Smitty’s Restaurant when she was 11 – a job she credits with giving her the ability to think on her feet and talk to anyone about anything. “It was a great training ground for me! I had to be bold and well-spoken and really hone my memory. I use these skills every day at work,” she says.
Television came calling in 1997. Having spent a year studying Film and Television at Capilano College in Vancouver, and many hours taking acting classes, auditioning and doing commercials, she landed a job as the Video Tape Librarian at Vancouver Television, now CTV Vancouver. It wasn’t long before Nicola was on the air covering the Weather and Traffic beat for VTV Breakfast, weekdays 6 – 9 am.
Nicola stayed at CTV Vancouver for eight years. She took a brief hiatus to launch a radio morning show for 1410 CFUN, and to have two babies, but returned to CTV to take the Weekend Weather job and start her degree in Meteorology.
In 2005, a year away from finishing her degree, she jumped at the chance to work at Global Edmonton.
“I knew I wanted more a challenging job in weather. By this point, I was so serious and captivated with science, that I wanted to be in a thrilling and dynamic environment with every kind of weather to forecast. ”
In 2006, Nicola completed her degree in Broadcast Meteorology at Mississippi State University. She is also a CMOS Endorsed Weathercaster.
