BANFF, Alta.- A hungry—and notorious—bear has once against forced the closure of an area in Banff National Park.
A few days after Parks Canada staff pulled out seven elk that had fallen through the ice over the Bow River, they received reports of a bear feeding on another elk carcass.
The area was closed, so the bear could continue feeding. For an entire week, he continued to eat the elk (after covering it with spruce boughs to claim it) and even slept on it.

It turns out it was Bear #122, who was also responsible for two other closures during the summer after he was seen feeding on the carcasses of other bears near trails.
He weighs between 600 and 700 pounds, and parks staff say he appears to be ready to take on a long, cold winter.
