Tornado warning lifted near Okotoks, Alta. as severe thunderstorms sweep across Alberta

Environment and Climate Change Canada has lifted a tornado warning near Okotoks, a town south of Calgary.

According to the alert issued at 2:53 p.m., ECCC said the warning affected Brown-Lowery Park, Okotoks, Diamond Valley and High River.

Loonie-sized hail was spotted in Okotoks on Monday afternoon.

The national weather agency also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Calgary and surrounding areas of Rocky View County, including Cochrane on Monday.

According to an alert on Monday afternoon, meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, nickel- to ping pong ball sized-hail and heavy rain.

At around 3:23 p.m., ECCC said the line of thunderstorms was located from Prentiss to just northwest of Blackie and is moving to the east at 40 km/h.

Fortis Alberta reported power outages affecting hundreds in areas of Cochrane at 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. A power outage affecting more than 1,700 people was also reported in Airdrie, a city north of Calgary, at around 3 p.m.

The severe thunderstorm warning was lifted for Rocky View County at around 3:25 p.m. while the warning for Calgary was lifted at around 3:45 p.m.

ECCC ended thunderstorm watches for both areas at around 5:26 p.m.
