CALGARY- Premier Alison Redford officially opened the new Central Alberta Cancer Centre in Red Deer on Thursday, with a promise it will give families in Central Alberta better access to cancer care.
The new centre means fewer people will need to travel to Calgary or Edmonton for treatment; it should also ease the pressure on cancer centres in those cities.

“We want to make sure that anyone who is diagnosed with cancer gets the supports and treatment they need to heal, says Redford. “This centre will house cutting-edge technology and give patients earlier diagnosis and treatment closer to home.”
The centre is expected to deal with more than 15,000 patient visits in its first year; the radiation centre at the facility is expected to treat more than 600 people annually.
Cancer is the leading cause of premature death in Alberta. Every year, more than 16,000 Albertans are diagnosed with the disease.
