‘Mistaken identity trial’ begins in Montreal

MONTREAL – A new trial began this week at the Montreal courthouse, more than eight years after the alleged crime.

On October 25, 2005, Dawson College graduate Raymond Ellis was kicked, punched and stabbed 11 times inside the Aria Nightclub on Saint-Denis Street in downtown Montreal.

Two of the men allegedly involved in the attack, 29-year-old Evens Belleville and 28-year-old John Tshiamala are on trial facing manslaughter charges.

This is the second trial for the men in the case.

In his opening remarks to the jury, crown prosecutor Alexandre Dalmau said that Ellis may have been the victim of mistaken identity.

The 25-year-old victim was allegedly identified at the nightclub as a rival gang member.

At the time of the crime, Ellis owned a small business on Sainte-Catherine Street.

Dalmau said that he plans to present about 30 witnesses to the jury and the trial is expected to last up to eight weeks.

The elderly parents of the victim were not in court Tuesday.

In March 2011, Joyce and Raphael Ellis told Global News that they were anxious for justice and were hoping for some sort of closure.
