1 arrested after RCMP standoff outside Victoria

RCMP on Vancouver Island say one person was taken into custody following a major police response to a weapons call.

In a Thursday media release, the Westshore RCMP said officers were called to break-in in progress in the 800 block of Finlayson Arm Road in the District of Highlands around 1 p.m.

A returning homeowner had arrived to discover an intruder inside the home, police said.

Mounties said they were concerned the intruder was potentially armed with a gun, resulting in a major police response including an Emergency Response Team.

Police said they were able to arrest a 20-year-old man around 4:40 p.m. with the help of a negotiator. Investigators recovered a firearm inside the home, police added.

The suspect is known to police and remains in custody pending a court appearance.
