NEW YORK – Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri has been given a three-game suspension by the National Hockey League.

Kadri hit Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom in the head in the first period of Wednesday’s game at Minnesota.

Kadri received a minor penalty for goaltender interference on the play.

Later in the game, Kadri was given a match penalty for hitting Minnesota’s Mikael Granlund in the head.

The Wild went on to defeat the Maple Leafs 2-1 in a shootout.

Kadri, who has 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 18 games this season, will forfeit US$44,615.37 in salary.
