An uncle and his great-nephew have been identified as the two lobster fishermen who died on the opening day of their season off the northeastern coast of New Brunswick.
Fifty-eight-year-old Eugene Beaudin and 33-year-old Normand Gilbert Beaudin fell from the fishing boat early Saturday.
RCMP had said earlier that Normand Beaudin was the nephew of Eugene Beaudin, but a friend of the family clarified the relationship later in the day.
Cpl. Sylvain Bergeron said the captain, Robert Beaudin — who is related to the two dead men — survived the mishap and has spoken to the Mounties about what occurred, and while details of how the fishermen fell in the water remain unclear, “no foul play is suspected.”
The RCMP said in a news release Saturday the men died in waters about seven kilometres off Miscou Island, which juts into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The release said the body of Eugene Beaudin was the first to be located, while Normand Beaudin’s body was found after a short search.
A funeral home obituary says Eugene Beaudin lived in Petite-Lameque, N.B., and Normand Beaudin lived in Lameque.
