EDMONTON – Several homeowners who were left with a big mess on their hands after heavy rains flooded their homes this summer, now have another problem to deal with. The storage pods, where they were keeping personal belongings while finishing repairs to their basements, have been hit by thieves.
“This is very upsetting for the residents, many of whom are seniors,” said EPS Cst. Jesse Burgess. “They have had to deal with flooding, as well as the very expensive process of gutting and repairing their residences, only to be robbed and victimized.”
On Thursday, police responded to reports of four storage pods in the area of 133 Avenue and 106 Street being broken into with what’s believed to be a bolt cutter.

Residents say property was either stolen, or destroyed.
“You can just see every single box has been ripped open, stuff has just been dumped on the floor. Some of the stuff was just outright crushed,” said Christine Haukenfrers.
There are about 30 storage pods located near the homes in the alley and on the street.
Police continue to investigate, and ask area residents to keep an eye out for unfamiliar people in their neighbourhood, as well as report any suspicious activity as soon as possible.
They also encourage people to keep valuable or sentimental items inside their homes.
