As if watching their apartment building burn down two weeks ago wasn’t bad enough, three Stony Plain residents say the few items that were salvageable in their apartment have been stolen.
“We had this huge bookshelf of full of games and it was completely bare, and that was the first indicator,” recalls David Fraser. “Then we noticed the TV is gone.”
In total, he and his two roommates estimate $8,000 in electronics was taken from their suite.
Since the $4 million blaze at the Sonora Apartments, which investigators was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials, security has been set up to monitor the building. So the trio wonder how, with security on site, someone still managed to make off with the items.

“There are probably six or seven boxes and a TV to transport over the fence with nobody – our entire building was fenced around by other apartments – and nobody’s come and said anything about it,” says Chris Costa.
“I definitely am livid with the security company,” adds his wife, Cristy Barrett.
Stony Plain RCMP say they are investigating this alleged theft. As for the security company, a spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
“Knowing what little was left was secure was wonderful, and then all of a sudden for it to be ripped away, I don’t understand how someone could do that,” Cristy says.
“In the end, you can only feel sorry for them,” says Fraser, “because obviously they feel like they’re in a worse off position than us and they needed this stuff.”
The three are currently staying with David’s parents. Overwhelmed by the support they’ve received, they are trying to focus on letting go of the anger and focusing on finding a new place to live, then starting over.
