Stars descend on Calgary for TV series ‘Fargo’

TORONTO — Film actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton and Private Practice star Kate Walsh are calling Calgary home this winter.

Alberta is standing in for North Dakota and Minnesota for a small screen adaptation of Fargo, the 1996 Oscar-nominated film by Joel and Ethan Coen.

The Coen brothers are executive producers of the 10-episode series, which is being produced for U.S. cable channel FX.

The cast includes Colin Hanks (Dexter), Martin Freeman (Sherlock), Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad) and Ontario-born Oliver Platt (The Big C) and Joshua Close (The Unusuals).

Calgary Police Services issued a release Tuesday advising residents they may spot police cars marked as Bemidji and Duluth Police.

Fargo is benefitting from incentives through the Alberta Multimedia Development Fund.

The real Fargo is more than 1,500 kilometres southeast of Calgary — or about 3.5 hours south of Winnipeg.

Cameras are set to roll in the Calgary area until early April.
