Quebec child dies after being found seriously injured in Beauce home

A young child who was hospitalized in critical condition after sustaining “accidental” self-inflicted injuries at a home in Quebec’s Beauce region on Monday morning has died.

Quebec provincial police confirmed the child’s death Monday afternoon.

The child, who was under the age of five, had been found seriously injured by paramedics at home in n Saint-Côme-Linière at around 10:30 a.m. The Sûreté du Québec said it is not releasing the child’s age for confidentiality reasons.

“The nature of the injuries and the circumstances in which the event took place are not public,” said Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Claude Doiron, citing an ongoing police investigation.

He added that the child’s injuries appeared to accidental, but that police aren’t ruling out any hypotheses as the investigation is still in its early stages.

An SQ investigator and a technician from the forensic identification service were dispatched to the home to analyze the scene and to better understand the circumstances that led to the child’s fatal injuries.

The Coroner’s Office has been notified of the situation and will conduct its own investigation in parallel with the police investigation.
