CALGARY- A puppy that’s believed to have been the victim of a vicious attack is on the road to recovery.

Seven-week-old Nero was rushed into emergency surgery after being dropped off at the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society suffering from severe facial burns. The dog was found wandering in a work camp in Saskatchewan, and it’s believed someone poured flammable liquid on him before lighting him on fire.

Nero lost his ears as a result, and may need surgery on his eyes as his lids have curled out. He is now on strong pain medication and antibiotics to deal with infections.

Despite the long road ahead of him, caregivers say the pup is happy, and plays with other dogs and toys at his foster home. He is also not afraid of people and greets them with “puppy kisses and cuddles.”

“We have received an outpouring of support from the community. Our phones have been ringing non-stop and our email boxes filling up with people wanting to help or just let them know that they care,” said AARCS’ executive director Deanna Thompson, in an e-mail to Global News. “Donations for his care have been steady and there have been in excess of 30 families wanting to adopt him as far away as Ontario.”

She adds that they hope the horrific incident will spark change.

“We hope that the silver-lining in this horrible act of cruelty is that it brings aware to the plight of abandoned and abused animals.”

So far, no one has been arrested in connection with the case.
