CALGARY- A Calgary animal rescue organization says even its veteran staff and volunteers are in shock after a badly injured puppy was brought into its care on Friday.
The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) says Nero, a seven week old puppy, was immediately rushed into emergency surgery after being dropped off with severe facial burns.
AARCS says the damage was extensive. The puppy lost his ears and now requires weeks of recovery and has an uncertain future.

“It’s hard to imagine how anyone could do that to any kind of being,” says Katie Ayers, who’s currently fostering Nero. “I’d like to think that maybe they weren’t fully in their right mind.”
AARCS says it received a call from a concerned citizen working in Saskatchewan, who told them a puppy had wandered into a work camp. Workers there made arrangements to send Nero to the Calgary rescue.
Staff at AARCS say they believe someone poured a flammable liquid on the puppy before lighting him on fire.
The non-profit charity says it is trying to find out who is responsible for the injuries.
