WATCH: New trailer for made-in-Canada ‘RoboCop’ released

TORONTO — “Why is America so robophobic?”

This is the question posed by Samuel L. Jackson, as Pat Novak, in a brand new trailer for the reboot of RoboCop.

Producers are hoping no one is robophobic, of course, when the made-in-Canada action flick opens in theatres on Feb. 12, 2014.

It was primarily shot last year in Toronto and Hamilton, Ont., which are standing in for Detroit in 2028.

In May, an extra action sequence was shot inside the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre — where star Joel Kinnaman was working on the TV series The Killing.

(Look closely at the 1:56 mark in the trailer and you can see a Cactus Club Café sign in the background.)

Kinnaman takes on the crime-fighting cyborg role played by Peter Weller in the 1987 original and the 1990 sequel. Robert Burke had the title role in 1993’s RoboCop 3 and Richard Eden played the part in the short-lived made-in-Toronto RoboCop series.

Directed by José Padilha, the re-imagined RoboCop also stars Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman and Montreal’s Jay Baruchel.

The movie will be also be released in IMAX.
