Calgary 23rd most congested city in North America – study

An annual survey by GPS software company TomTom ranks Calgary 23rd in a list of North American cities with the worst traffic congestion.

For the first time, Vancouver has nudged out Los Angeles to take the number one spot.

Vancouver is followed by L.A., San Francisco, Honolulu and Seattle .

Traffic delays cost Calgarians almost ten working days a year, according to the survey.

TomTom found if a drive takes 20 minutes normally, with congestion it takes 24 minutes.

If a commute takes an hour during off peak times, the drive would take 81 minutes.

The Thursday morning commute is the worst and the Friday afternoon commute the fastest.

TomTom says their data goes beyond people’s perceptions of congestion, by using data from the thousands of sensors in their GPS units in vehicles.

In the entire Americas – Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil are in the top spots.
